What this worksheet covers

This is a 24-problem missing number for grade 5 division, printed in black and white with the key on page two. The blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 8,372. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "___ ÷ 30 = 66" and "6840 ÷ 76 = ___". The sheet sits inside Common Core 5.NBT.6, in the grade 5 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.

Skills practised

Grade 5 division means two-digit divisors, four-digit dividends and dividing by powers of ten. What a student is asked to do here is division by two-digit divisors. Working the page asks a student to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Twenty different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "___ ÷ 30 = 66" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. Blanking the dividend or divisor turns the sheet into multiplication practice from the other side.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "3201 ÷ ___ = 33", Set B's is "4830 ÷ 69 = ___".

How to use this worksheet

Give this missing number uninterrupted. At grade 5, division is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 24 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Keep the key face down until all 24 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.

One mistake to watch for

Two-digit divisors are estimated badly, so the trial quotient is too big and has to be redone. Problem 17 on this grade 5 missing number page, "6840 ÷ 76 = ___", is where to look for it.

The student is not rounding the divisor before estimating.

Round the divisor to the nearest ten, estimate against that, and expect to adjust by one.
