What this worksheet covers
This is a 24-problem missing number for grade 4 mixed operations, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 134. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "___ - 44 = 11" and "28 + 85 = ___". It is written against Common Core 4.NBT.4 — Number & Operations in Base Ten, grade 4.
Skills practised
Grade 4 mixed operations means two-step problems and expressions with parentheses. Specifically, the problems practise all four operations with larger numbers. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Twenty different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the missing number format
Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "___ - 44 = 11" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A blank on a mixed page can belong to any operation, so the student has to reason about the relationship rather than recall a fact.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "12 × 10 = ___", Set B's is "___ + 36 = 107".
How to use this worksheet
Give this missing number uninterrupted. At grade 4, mixed operations is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 24 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Keep the key face down until all 24 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
One mistake to watch for
Two-step expressions are evaluated left to right: 3 + 4 × 5 gives 35. Watch problem 17 of this missing number — "28 + 85 = ___" — for this one.
The convention that multiplication comes first has not been taught, or is not yet automatic.
Box the multiplication or division first on every problem, then evaluate, and only then add or subtract.
