What this worksheet covers

There are 24 multiplication problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. The blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 656. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "___ × 4 = 132" and "___ × 1 = 61". Common Core 4.NBT.5 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 4 multiplication means two- and three-digit by one-digit products and two-digit by two-digit multiplication. Specifically, the problems practise two-digit by one-digit multiplication. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 22 different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "___ × 4 = 132" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. An unknown factor is division in disguise, so this format is where multiplication and division fact families are built.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "29 × ___ = 174", Set B's is "23 × ___ = 23".

How to use this worksheet

Work the 24 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 4 student to find their own multiplication error teaches more than seeing it circled. Keep the key face down until all 24 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.

One mistake to watch for

The carried digit in long multiplication is added before multiplying instead of after. On this grade 4 missing number, problem 17 ("___ × 1 = 61") is the kind of item where it shows.

The order of the two steps in each column has not been made explicit.

Say the two steps aloud for a few problems: multiply first, then add what was carried.
