What this worksheet covers

There are eighteen division problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 132. Problems 7 and 13, for instance, are "42 ÷ 6" and "44 ÷ 4". The sheet sits inside Common Core 4.NBT.6, in the grade 4 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.

Skills practised

At grade 4, division is about two- and three-digit dividends with one-digit divisors, with and without remainders, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise grade 4 Division Practice. To finish it, a student has to recall the division facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. Ten different answers appear across the eighteen problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

A drill is straight practice: 18 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 7, "42 ÷ 6" is typical of the whole page. A run of same-shaped quotients is where the steps of the algorithm stop needing to be thought about.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the sheet as it was first published on MathSheetLab, and Sets B and C were derived from it problem by problem: each number became a slot redrawn with the same shape, and every answer was recomputed exactly. Where Set A's problem 10 is "36 ÷ 4", Set B's is "21 ÷ 7".

How to use this worksheet

By grade 4 a student should take all eighteen division problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more division practice piles on. Print Set B of this division drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.

One mistake to watch for

A zero in the quotient is skipped: 618 ÷ 6 is answered 13. Watch problem 13 of this drill — "44 ÷ 4" — for this one.

When a digit of the dividend is smaller than the divisor, nothing is written and the place is lost.

Have the student write a digit above every digit of the dividend, including the zero, before moving on.
