What this worksheet covers
This is a 10-problem word problems for grade 4 division, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Problems 4 and 7, for instance, are "Ben walks 20 laps over 4 days, the same number each day.…" and "Jonah walks 72 laps over 4 days, the same number each day.…".
Skills practised
The grade 4 division sequence covers two- and three-digit dividends with one-digit divisors, with and without remainders; this page sits inside it. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing.
About the word problems format
The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "Ben walks 20 laps over 4 days, the same number each day.…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Sharing and grouping situations both divide, but they read differently, and recognising both is the point.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 6 is "Ivan reads 4 pages every day for 10 days. How many pages…", Set B's is "A baker makes 10 muffins an hour. How many muffins does the…".
How to use this worksheet
By grade 4 a student should take all ten division problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more division practice piles on. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the ten problems needs a score attached to be useful.
One mistake to watch for
Division facts are found by guessing and checking with multiplication, slowly. Watch problem 7 of this word problems — "Jonah walks 72 laps over 4 days, the same number each day.…" — for this one.
The division fact is not stored; only the multiplication fact is.
Practise each times-table row as division facts too, and pair every missing-factor problem with its division form.
