What this worksheet covers
This is a 24-problem missing number for grade 4 addition, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 15,442. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "___ + 8470 = 10410" and "2445 + ___ = 4270". The sheet sits inside Common Core 4.NBT.4, in the grade 4 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.
Skills practised
At grade 4, addition is about the standard algorithm on four- and five-digit numbers, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skill on the page: four-digit addition with the standard algorithm. Working the page asks a student to reason backwards from a result to a missing part.
About the missing number format
Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "___ + 8470 = 10410" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A blank on the left or in the middle turns addition into its own inverse and builds the fact-family idea that subtraction rests on.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "4052 + ___ = 13766", Set B's is "6391 + 1095 = ___".
How to use this worksheet
Give this missing number uninterrupted. At grade 4, addition is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 24 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Ask the student to re-work one missed addition problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Answers to the missing-number problems are the sum of the two visible numbers. On this grade 4 missing number, problem 17 ("2445 + ___ = 4270") is the kind of item where it shows.
The equals sign is being read as "write the answer here", not as a statement of balance.
Read the equation aloud as a sentence — "something plus five is twelve" — before touching the pencil.
