What this worksheet covers

This is a 72-problem timed drill for grade 4 division, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 810. Problems 25 and 49, for instance, are "28 ÷ 7" and "27 ÷ 3". It is written against Common Core 3.OA.7 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 3.

Skills practised

The grade 4 division sequence covers two- and three-digit dividends with one-digit divisors, with and without remainders; this page sits inside it. The skills on the page: division facts to 144 ÷ 12 and dividing multiples of ten. To finish it, a student has to recall the division facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. Twenty different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 72; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 25, "28 ÷ 7" is a typical item, is four to five minutes. Division facts are recalled through their multiplication partners, and a timed page shows which partners are not yet automatic.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 37 is "84 ÷ 7", Set B's is "8 ÷ 8".

How to use this worksheet

Work the 72 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 4 student to find their own division error teaches more than seeing it circled. Ask the student to re-work one missed division problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
