What this worksheet covers

Twenty division problems fill this vertical format page; problem 7 asks "42 ÷ 6", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: seven quotients leave a remainder that has to be reported, not rounded away and the numbers run as high as 5,940. Further down, problem 14 asks "184 ÷ 9". The sheet sits inside Common Core 4.NBT.6, in the grade 4 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.

Skills practised

At grade 4, division is about two- and three-digit dividends with one-digit divisors, with and without remainders, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise two-digit by one-digit division, division with remainders, and three-digit by one-digit division. To finish it, a student has to interpret what is left over. Nineteen different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the vertical format format

The 20 problems here — problem 7, "42 ÷ 6", for one — are printed in column form, the layout the standard algorithm is written for. The long-division bracket is the layout the algorithm was written for; the quotient goes where it belongs.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 11 is "108 ÷ 8", Set B's is "67 ÷ 8".

How to use this worksheet

Give this vertical format uninterrupted. At grade 4, division is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and twenty problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the twenty problems needs a score attached to be useful.

One mistake to watch for

A zero in the quotient is skipped: 618 ÷ 6 is answered 13. Watch problem 14 of this vertical format — "184 ÷ 9" — for this one.

When a digit of the dividend is smaller than the divisor, nothing is written and the place is lost.

Have the student write a digit above every digit of the dividend, including the zero, before moving on.
