What this worksheet covers
60 time and money problems fill this timed drill page; problem 21 asks "Write "quarter past 9" as a digital time.", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and the quantities are amounts of money, so answers need a dollar or cent sign to be complete. Further down, problem 41 asks "How many minutes from 1:30 to 3:30?". It is written against Common Core 2.MD.8 — Measurement & Data, grade 2.
Skills practised
Grade 2 time and money means reading a clock to five minutes, counting mixed coins and bills, and making change from a dollar. What a student is asked to do here is counting mixed coins and bills, elapsed time in half hours, and quarter past and quarter to. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing and carry money notation through to the answer. 49 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
With 60 short problems such as problem 21, "Write "quarter past 9" as a digital time." and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. Coin values and o'clock times are facts, and a timed page shows which are known and which are still being counted.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 31 is "3 dollar bills, 3 quarters, 1 dime, 1 nickel and 3 pennies", Set B's is "3 dollar bills, 3 quarters, 1 nickel and 1 penny".
How to use this worksheet
Sit alongside for this time and money timed drill. At grade 2 the useful information is not the score but which of the 60 problems drew a pause. Print Set B of this time and money timed drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
