What this worksheet covers

This is a 60-problem timed drill for grade 1 time and money, printed in black and white with the key on page two. The quantities are amounts of money, so answers need a dollar or cent sign to be complete and the numbers run as high as 30. Problems 21 and 41, for instance, are "8 quarters" and "Write "half past 6" as a digital time.". It is written against Common Core 1.MD.3 — Measurement & Data, grade 1.

Skills practised

The grade 1 time and money sequence covers reading a clock to the half hour, counting like coins, and two kinds of coins together; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is counting like coins, o'clock and half past, and the value of each coin. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can carry money notation through to the answer. 50 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 60; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 21, "8 quarters" is a typical item, is three to four minutes. Coin values and o'clock times are facts, and a timed page shows which are known and which are still being counted.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 31 is "4 quarters", Set B's is "6 dimes".

How to use this worksheet

Grade 1 attention runs short, so split these 60 time and money problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Print Set B of this time and money timed drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
