What this worksheet covers
This is a 60-problem timed drill for grade 2 fractions, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part. Problems 21 and 41, for instance, are "A rectangle is cut into 2 equal parts and 1 part is shaded.…" and "A chocolate bar is cut into 2 equal parts and 1 part is…". The skill maps to Common Core 2.G.3.
Skills practised
At grade 2, fractions is about naming halves, thirds and fourths of a shape, and half or a quarter of a set, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise naming halves, thirds and fourths, half and a quarter of a set, and which fraction is bigger. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing and work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms. Sixteen different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 60; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 21, "A rectangle is cut into 2 equal parts and 1 part is shaded.…" is a typical item, is three to four minutes. Equivalent fractions and simple sums recalled quickly are what free a student's attention for the harder operations later.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 31 is "A circle is cut into 2 equal parts and 1 part is shaded.…", Set B's is "A circle is cut into 4 equal parts and 1 part is shaded.…".
How to use this worksheet
Sit alongside for this fractions timed drill. At grade 2 the useful information is not the score but which of the 60 problems drew a pause. If more than a third of the 60 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in fractions rather than assigning Set B.
