What this worksheet covers
There are 24 time and money problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, one of the 24 problems involve a negative quantity and each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression. Problems 9 and 16, for instance, are "Start at 7:30. What time is it 60 minutes later?" and "Tessa buys a book for $0.70 and pays with $1.00. How much…". Common Core 2.MD.7 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
Grade 2 time and money means reading a clock to five minutes, counting mixed coins and bills, and making change from a dollar. Specifically, the problems practise reading a clock to five minutes, counting mixed coins and bills, and elapsed time in half hours. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, keep the decimal points aligned, and track direction as well as magnitude. 22 different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the mixed review format
Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 24 problems here cover five different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 9, "Start at 7:30. What time is it 60 minutes later?" sits next to problems of a different kind. Clocks, coins, change and elapsed time on one page keep the student switching between two systems, which is what daily life asks.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "What time does the clock show?", Set B's is "Carla buys a sticker for $0.47 and pays with $1.00. How…".
How to use this worksheet
Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 2. Fold this mixed review in half, do one part of the 24 problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. If more than a third of the 24 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in time and money rather than assigning Set B.
One mistake to watch for
Change is found by subtracting the payment from the price. On this grade 2 mixed review, problem 16 ("Tessa buys a book for $0.70 and pays with $1.00. How much…") is the kind of item where it shows.
The two amounts have not been identified as "what was given" and "what was owed".
Count up from the price to the amount paid with coins; the coins used are the change.
