What this worksheet covers
There are 24 time and money problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits and the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "___ pennies = 5¢" and "$0.42 + ___ = $1.00". The sheet sits inside Common Core 2.MD.7, in the grade 2 Measurement & Data strand.
Skills practised
The grade 2 time and money sequence covers reading a clock to five minutes, counting mixed coins and bills, and making change from a dollar; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise elapsed time in half hours, making change from a dollar, and how many coins. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can keep the decimal points aligned, carry money notation through to the answer, and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Eighteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the missing number format
Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "___ pennies = 5¢" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. How many coins, or how many minutes, reverses the counting and tests whether the values are understood.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "9:00 + ___ minutes = 9:45", Set B's is "6:00 + ___ minutes = 7:00".
How to use this worksheet
Grade 2 attention runs short, so split these 24 time and money problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Date the missing number before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the time and money stuck.
One mistake to watch for
Coins are counted by number rather than by value: three dimes and two quarters is "5 cents". On this grade 2 missing number, problem 17 ("$0.42 + ___ = $1.00") is the kind of item where it shows.
A coin is being treated as a unit of one.
Sort coins by type, count each type by its value, and write the running total.
