Set A of this grade 2 timed drill sheet holds 60 multiplication problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, the numbers run as high as 12. Two problems from the middle of the page — "Double 8" and "7 × 2" — show the range. Common Core 2.OA.4 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
At grade 2, multiplication is about equal groups, arrays as repeated addition, and skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is equal groups, multiplying by 2, 3, 5 and 10, and doubling numbers to 12. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can recall the multiplication facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. 28 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
With 60 short problems such as problem 21, "Double 8" and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. The times tables are the one set of facts that must be automatic, and a timed page is how you find out whether they are.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 31 is "5 × 1", Set B's is "1 × 4".
How to use this worksheet
Grade 2 attention runs short, so split these 60 multiplication problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Date the timed drill before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the multiplication stuck.
