What this worksheet covers
There are 72 time and money problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Problems 25 and 49, for instance, are "Start at 9:10. What time is it 70 minutes later?" and "How many minutes from 2:30 to 2:35?". It is written against Common Core 3.MD.1 — Measurement & Data, grade 3.
Skills practised
The grade 3 time and money sequence covers reading a clock to the minute, elapsed time in minutes, making change, and adding money; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise elapsed time in minutes, making change, and adding and subtracting money. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing, keep the decimal points aligned, and carry money notation through to the answer. 68 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 72; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 25, "Start at 9:10. What time is it 70 minutes later?" is a typical item, is four to five minutes. Coin values and o'clock times are facts, and a timed page shows which are known and which are still being counted.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 37 is "How many minutes from 1:35 to 2:30?", Set B's is "Start at 11:05. What time is it 25 minutes later?".
How to use this worksheet
Work the 72 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 3 student to find their own time and money error teaches more than seeing it circled. Mark the 72 problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.
