What this worksheet covers
60 addition problems fill this timed drill page; problem 21 asks "18 + 2", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, 22 of the 60 column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 18. Further down, problem 41 asks "15 + 2". It is written against Common Core 2.OA.2 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 2.
Skills practised
At grade 2, addition is about two-digit addition within 100 with regrouping, and a first look at three-digit sums, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skill on the page: addition facts within 20. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. Fifteen different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
With 60 short problems such as problem 21, "18 + 2" and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. Fact recall has to be automatic before column addition can be, and a timed page is the only honest test of automatic.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 31 is "9 + 9", Set B's is "11 + 6".
How to use this worksheet
Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 2. Fold this timed drill in half, do one part of the 60 problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Keep the key face down until all 60 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
