What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 2 drill sheet holds 24 time and money problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, twelve of the problems are drawn clock faces to read and the quantities are amounts of money, so answers need a dollar or cent sign to be complete. Two problems from the middle of the page — "1 dollar bill, 3 dimes, 1 nickel and 2 pennies" and "2 dollar bills, 1 quarter, 2 dimes and 2 nickels" — show the range. Common Core 2.MD.7 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 2 time and money means reading a clock to five minutes, counting mixed coins and bills, and making change from a dollar. The skills on the page: reading a clock to five minutes and counting mixed coins and bills. To finish it, a student has to carry money notation through to the answer and read both hands of an analog clock. 23 different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

This drill runs 24 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 10, "1 dollar bill, 3 dimes, 1 nickel and 2 pennies" shows the level it holds. Clock faces and coin sets in a steady run are how the two readings — hands and values — become automatic.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "What time does the clock show?", Set B's is "What time does the clock show?".

How to use this worksheet

Grade 2 attention runs short, so split these 24 time and money problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 24 problems needs a score attached to be useful.

One mistake to watch for

Minutes are read from the numeral the minute hand points to: 3:20 is read as 3:04. On this grade 2 drill, problem 18 ("2 dollar bills, 1 quarter, 2 dimes and 2 nickels") is the kind of item where it shows.

The face has one set of numerals doing two jobs, and the student has only learned one.

Count by fives around the face aloud while pointing at each numeral, then match the minute hand to that count.
