This is a 14-problem word problems for grade 7 percents, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, every problem is set in a short situation, so the first decision is which operation it calls for and operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Problems 5 and 10, for instance, are "You deposit $250.00 at 4% simple interest for one year. How…" and "A dinner bill is $85.00 and you add a 20% tip. What is the…". How to use this worksheet
Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for fourteen problems. At grade 7, percents rewards care over speed — a rushed word problems gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Date the word problems before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the percents stuck.
One mistake to watch for
Percent change is computed against the new value instead of the original. On this grade 7 word problems, problem 10 ("A dinner bill is $85.00 and you add a 20% tip. What is the…") is the kind of item where it shows.
The reference quantity has not been identified.
Write "change ÷ original" above the problem every time, and label which number is the original.
