What this worksheet covers
24 fractions problems fill this missing number page; problem 9 asks "2/5 + ___ = 3/5", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part and the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page. Further down, problem 17 asks "4 ÷ ___ = 12". The sheet sits inside Common Core 6.NS.1, in the grade 6 The Number System strand.
Skills practised
At grade 6, fractions is about dividing fractions by fractions and all four operations with mixed numbers, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise missing factors, missing divisors, and missing addends. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Fourteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the missing number format
The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "2/5 + ___ = 3/5" is one of them. A missing numerator or a missing factor asks the student to think about the fraction relationship in reverse.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "___ × 2/5 = 4/5", Set B's is "___ × 4/6 = 4".
How to use this worksheet
Work it without a calculator. Every one of the 24 fractions problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 6 skips exactly the reasoning being built. Keep the key face down until all 24 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
One mistake to watch for
Answers are left unsimplified or as improper fractions when the sheet asks for lowest terms. Problem 17 on this grade 6 missing number page, "4 ÷ ___ = 12", is where to look for it.
Simplifying is seen as an optional extra step rather than part of the answer.
Add a checking step: is there a number that divides both parts? Is the top bigger than the bottom?
