Skills practised

Grade 6 integers means comparing and ordering integers, opposites, absolute value, and a first look at adding on a number line. Specifically, the problems practise opposites and adding integers on a number line. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can track direction as well as magnitude and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Nineteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "72 + ___ = 0" is one of them. A missing addend or factor with a sign is the sharpest test of whether the rules are understood rather than pattern-matched.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "-9 + ___ = 0", Set B's is "3 + ___ = 0".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 6 an integers answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 24 answers. Date the missing number before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the integers stuck.

One mistake to watch for

Ordering integers puts -8 above -3 because 8 is bigger than 3. Watch problem 17 of this missing number — "4 + ___ = 0" — for this one.

Magnitude is being compared instead of position.

Place both on a number line and read left to right; further left is always less.
