What this worksheet covers
This is a 24-problem missing number for grade 6 multiplication, printed in black and white with the key on page two. The blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 576,380. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "783 × 102 = ___" and "958 × 495 = ___". Common Core 6.NS.3 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
At grade 6, multiplication is about multi-digit multiplication, greatest common factor, least common multiple and perfect squares, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise multi-digit multiplication. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can reason backwards from a result to a missing part.
About the missing number format
Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "783 × 102 = ___" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. An unknown factor is division in disguise, so this format is where multiplication and division fact families are built.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "___ × 716 = 230552", Set B's is "910 × ___ = 873600".
How to use this worksheet
Work it without a calculator. Every one of the 24 multiplication problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 6 skips exactly the reasoning being built. Keep the key face down until all 24 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
One mistake to watch for
In two-digit multiplication the second partial product is not shifted left, so 34 × 12 comes out as 102. Watch problem 17 of this missing number — "958 × 495 = ___" — for this one.
The 1 in 12 is being treated as one, not ten.
Have the student write the placeholder zero in the ones column of the second row and say "ten times" aloud as they start it.
