What this worksheet covers

There are 24 decimals problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: operands run to three decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits and the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "___ - 14.278 = 35.093" and "70.939 + 32.500 = ___". The sheet sits inside Common Core 6.NS.3, in the grade 6 The Number System strand.

Skills practised

At grade 6, decimals is about multiplying and dividing decimals by decimals, and multi-digit decimal sums and differences, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is multiplying decimals by decimals, adding multi-digit decimals, and subtracting multi-digit decimals. Working the page asks a student to keep the decimal points aligned and reason backwards from a result to a missing part.

About the missing number format

Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "___ - 14.278 = 35.093" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A missing addend or factor with decimals asks the student to undo an operation, which exposes place-value gaps that forward computation hides.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "14.1 × ___ = 57.81", Set B's is "___ × 4.6 = 45.08".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for 24 problems. At grade 6, decimals rewards care over speed — a rushed missing number gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Keep the key face down until all 24 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.

One mistake to watch for

The decimal point in a product is placed by lining up the points. Watch problem 17 of this missing number — "70.939 + 32.500 = ___" — for this one.

The addition rule is being reused for multiplication, where it does not apply.

Count decimal places in both factors and give the product that many; estimate first so a wildly wrong placement stands out.
