What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 2 word problems sheet holds eight story problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: every problem is set in a short situation, so the first decision is which operation it calls for and the quantities are amounts of money, so answers need a dollar or cent sign to be complete. Two problems from the middle of the page — "Each notebook has 4 pages. How many pages are in 6…" and "A store sells 3 tickets each day. How many tickets does it…" — show the range.
Skills practised
Grade 2 multiplication means equal groups, arrays as repeated addition, and skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing and carry money notation through to the answer.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 3, "Each notebook has 4 pages. How many pages are in 6…" among them, and the key gives each of the 8 answers with its unit. Equal groups, arrays and comparison situations all multiply, and recognising them is the skill the drill sheets cannot teach.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 5 is "Each ticket costs 3 dollars. How much do 3 tickets cost?", Set B's is "Leo practices piano 3 minutes a day for 7 days. How many…".
How to use this worksheet
Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 2. Fold this word problems in half, do one part of the eight problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the eight problems needs a score attached to be useful.
One mistake to watch for
Arrays are counted one square at a time. Problem 6 on this grade 2 word problems page, "A store sells 3 tickets each day. How many tickets does it…", is where to look for it.
Rows have not yet been seen as equal groups that can be added.
Write the repeated-addition sentence beneath each array and read it before counting.
