Equal groups

Helps when multiplication is new: it shows what the two numbers mean.

Step 1Make 2 groups with 3 in each group. That is 2 rows of 3.

This is a 22-problem mixed review for grade 2 multiplication, printed in black and white with the key on page two. The quantities stay small, which keeps the idea in the foreground rather than the size of the numbers. Problems 8 and 15, for instance, are "1 row of 5: 5" and "5 rows of 4: 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4". Skills practiced

Grade 2 multiplication means equal groups, arrays as repeated addition, and skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. The skill on the page: rectangular Arrays & Equal Addends Practice. About the mixed review format

Mixing facts, multiples of ten and larger products on one page keeps a student choosing a method instead of repeating one.

Set A is the original sheet; Sets B and C redraw each problem with the same shape and recomputed answers. Where Set A's problem 12 is "2 rows of 4: 4 + 4", Set B's is "2 rows of 1: 1 + 1".

One mistake to watch for

Arrays are counted one square at a time. On this grade 2 mixed review, problem 13 ("5 rows of 3: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3") is the kind of item where it shows.

Rows have not yet been seen as equal groups that can be added.

Write the repeated-addition sentence beneath each array and read it before counting.
