What this worksheet covers

This is a 20-problem vertical format for grade 2 multiplication, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, the numbers run as high as 10. Problems 7 and 14, for instance, are "5 × 3" and "10 × 10". It is written against Common Core 2.OA.4 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 2.

Skills practised

At grade 2, multiplication is about equal groups, arrays as repeated addition, and skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise equal groups and multiplying by 2, 3, 5 and 10. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can recall the multiplication facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. Fourteen different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the vertical format format

Vertical format stacks the two operands over a rule with space above for regrouped digits; the 20 problems, problem 7, "5 × 3" among them, sit four to a row. Stacked factors put the partial products in columns, which is where the place-value shift in long multiplication lives.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 11 is "2 × 4", Set B's is "5 × 2".

How to use this worksheet

Sit alongside for this multiplication vertical format. At grade 2 the useful information is not the score but which of the twenty problems drew a pause. Ask the student to re-work one missed multiplication problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.

One mistake to watch for

Arrays are counted one square at a time. On this grade 2 vertical format, problem 14 ("10 × 10") is the kind of item where it shows.

Rows have not yet been seen as equal groups that can be added.

Write the repeated-addition sentence beneath each array and read it before counting.
