What this worksheet covers
This is a 10-problem word problems for grade 5 mixed operations, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Problems 4 and 7, for instance, are "148 tickets are placed into trays that hold 4 tickets each.…" and "A pattern repeats 5 beads 49 times. How many beads are in…".
Skills practised
The grade 5 mixed operations sequence covers order of operations with parentheses and multi-digit computation; this page sits inside it. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing.
About the word problems format
The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "148 tickets are placed into trays that hold 4 tickets each.…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. The whole job in a mixed word problem is choosing the operation, which is exactly what a one-operation page never asks.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 6 is "Diego had 817 minutes to finish a test and used 816 minutes…", Set B's is "A farm had 951 eggs and sold 263 of them at the market. How…".
How to use this worksheet
Give this word problems uninterrupted. At grade 5, mixed operations is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and ten problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Date the word problems before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the mixed operations stuck.
One mistake to watch for
The operation sign is ignored: every problem on a mixed page is added. On this grade 5 word problems, problem 7 ("A pattern repeats 5 beads 49 times. How many beads are in…") is the kind of item where it shows.
Sign reading is not yet part of the routine because most practice pages only carry one operation.
Have the student circle or trace every operation sign before solving anything on the page.
