What this worksheet covers

There are twenty mixed operations problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Seven of the ten column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 910. Problems 7 and 14, for instance, are "55 × 10" and "572 − 282". It is written against Common Core 5.OA.1 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 5.

Skills practised

At grade 5, mixed operations is about order of operations with parentheses and multi-digit computation, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is grade 5 Mixed Operations Practice. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit. Nineteen different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

A drill is straight practice: 20 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 7, "55 × 10" is typical of the whole page. A drill that changes operation from problem to problem tests sign reading as much as computation.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the sheet as it was first published on MathSheetLab, and Sets B and C were derived from it problem by problem: each number became a slot redrawn with the same shape, and every answer was recomputed exactly. Where Set A's problem 11 is "71 × 2", Set B's is "36 × 2".

How to use this worksheet

Work the twenty problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 5 student to find their own mixed operations error teaches more than seeing it circled. Mark the twenty problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

Parentheses are treated as decoration. On this grade 5 drill, problem 14 ("572 − 282") is the kind of item where it shows.

Grouping symbols have been seen but not yet connected to "do this part first".

Have the student rewrite the value of the bracket above it before doing anything else.
