What this worksheet covers
There are ten story problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: every problem is set in a short situation, so the first decision is which operation it calls for and several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part. Problems 4 and 7, for instance, are "Tessa had a roll of 356 centimeters of ribbon and cut off…" and "A recipe needs 3/4 cup of flour. Rosa makes 2 batches. How…".
Skills practised
The grade 4 fractions sequence covers adding and subtracting like denominators, equivalent fractions, and multiplying by a whole number; this page sits inside it. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing and work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms.
About the word problems format
The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "Tessa had a roll of 356 centimeters of ribbon and cut off…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Fractions of recipes, distances and shares are where the abstract unit becomes a real quantity.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A store received 454 muffins on Monday and 231 muffins on…", Set B's is "The aquarium has 375 fish in one tank and 391 fish in…".
How to use this worksheet
By grade 4 a student should take all ten fractions problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more fractions practice piles on. Ask the student to re-work one missed fractions problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Answers are left unsimplified or as improper fractions when the sheet asks for lowest terms. Watch problem 7 of this word problems — "A recipe needs 3/4 cup of flour. Rosa makes 2 batches. How…" — for this one.
Simplifying is seen as an optional extra step rather than part of the answer.
Add a checking step: is there a number that divides both parts? Is the top bigger than the bottom?
