What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 4 word problems sheet holds ten story problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Two problems from the middle of the page — "A bus company moves 64 passengers using buses that hold 8…" and "A theater has 6 rows with 10 seats in each row. How many…" — show the range.
Skills practised
Grade 4 mixed operations means two-step problems and expressions with parentheses. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 4, "A bus company moves 64 passengers using buses that hold 8…" among them, and the key gives each of the 10 answers with its unit. The whole job in a mixed word problem is choosing the operation, which is exactly what a one-operation page never asks.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 6 is "There were 235 muffins in a bin. 91 of them were taken out.…", Set B's is "A book has 237 pages and Willa has read 104 of them. How…".
How to use this worksheet
By grade 4 a student should take all ten mixed operations problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more mixed operations practice piles on. Date the word problems before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the mixed operations stuck.
One mistake to watch for
Two-step expressions are evaluated left to right: 3 + 4 × 5 gives 35. Problem 7 on this grade 4 word problems page, "A theater has 6 rows with 10 seats in each row. How many…", is where to look for it.
The convention that multiplication comes first has not been taught, or is not yet automatic.
Box the multiplication or division first on every problem, then evaluate, and only then add or subtract.
