What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 4 word problems sheet holds ten story problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Two problems from the middle of the page — "One container weighs 401 grams and another weighs 191…" and "There are 455 pencils in one bin and 242 pencils in another…" — show the range.
Skills practised
At grade 4, addition is about the standard algorithm on four- and five-digit numbers, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 4, "One container weighs 401 grams and another weighs 191…" among them, and the key gives each of the 10 answers with its unit. Deciding that a situation calls for addition is a different skill from adding, and it needs its own practice.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A farm collected 243 eggs on Wednesday and 303 eggs on…", Set B's is "Xavier wrote 63 words in the morning and 224 words at…".
How to use this worksheet
By grade 4 a student should take all ten addition problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more addition practice piles on. Mark the ten problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.
One mistake to watch for
Speed collapses under a timer even though accuracy is fine. Watch problem 7 of this word problems — "There are 455 pencils in one bin and 242 pencils in another…" — for this one.
Facts are being reconstructed by counting rather than recalled.
Time a short run of the same facts daily for a week; the goal is a falling time on the same page, not a bigger page.
