What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 4 timed drill sheet holds 72 addition problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, 30 of the 72 column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 900. Two problems from the middle of the page — "7 + 13" and "17 + 3" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 2.OA.2 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 2.

Skills practised

Grade 4 addition means the standard algorithm on four- and five-digit numbers. The skills on the page: addition facts within 20 and adding hundreds mentally. Working the page asks a student to carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit. 22 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

With 72 short problems such as problem 25, "7 + 13" and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. Fact recall has to be automatic before column addition can be, and a timed page is the only honest test of automatic.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 37 is "15 + 3", Set B's is "14 + 6".

How to use this worksheet

Work the 72 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 4 student to find their own addition error teaches more than seeing it circled. If more than a third of the 72 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in addition rather than assigning Set B.
