What this worksheet covers

72 multiplication problems fill this timed drill page; problem 25 asks "6 × 10", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 500. Further down, problem 49 asks "3 × 11". Common Core 3.OA.7 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

At grade 4, multiplication is about two- and three-digit by one-digit products and two-digit by two-digit multiplication, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skills on the page: multiplication facts to 12 × 12 and multiplying by multiples of 10 and 100. Working the page asks a student to recall the multiplication facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. 54 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

With 72 short problems such as problem 25, "6 × 10" and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. The times tables are the one set of facts that must be automatic, and a timed page is how you find out whether they are.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 37 is "7 × 9", Set B's is "9 × 10".

How to use this worksheet

By grade 4 a student should take all 72 multiplication problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more multiplication practice piles on. If more than a third of the 72 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in multiplication rather than assigning Set B.
