What this worksheet covers

There are 24 addition problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: twelve of the nineteen column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 888. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "6 + 10" and "11 + 27 + 12". Common Core 2.NBT.5 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 2 addition means two-digit addition within 100 with regrouping, and a first look at three-digit sums. The skills on the page: two-digit addition within 100, two-digit addition with regrouping, and addition facts within 20. Working the page asks a student to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. 22 different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 24 problems here cover five different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 9, "6 + 10" sits next to problems of a different kind. Alternating shapes stops a student from running one procedure on autopilot down the page.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "35 + 45", Set B's is "37 + 28".

How to use this worksheet

Grade 2 attention runs short, so split these 24 addition problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. If more than a third of the 24 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in addition rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

The carried digit lands in the wrong column, or is dropped on the last step. Problem 17 on this grade 2 mixed review page, "11 + 27 + 12", is where to look for it.

The carry is being tracked in working memory instead of on paper.

Require the small carried digit to be written every time, and use graph paper so the digits cannot drift sideways.
