What this worksheet covers
Eight story problems fill this word problems page; problem 3 asks "Victor earned 13 points on the first level and 16 points on…", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Further down, problem 6 asks "A bookshelf has 7 picture books, 5 comic books, and 2…".
Skills practised
Grade 2 addition means two-digit addition within 100 with regrouping, and a first look at three-digit sums. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 3, "Victor earned 13 points on the first level and 16 points on…" among them, and the key gives each of the 8 answers with its unit. Deciding that a situation calls for addition is a different skill from adding, and it needs its own practice.

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 5 is "Carla wrote 44 words in the morning and 39 words at night.…", Set B's is "Victor swam 21 laps on Tuesday and 38 laps on Thursday. How…".
How to use this worksheet
Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 2. Fold this word problems in half, do one part of the eight problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Date the word problems before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the addition stuck.
One mistake to watch for
Three addends are added two at a time and the third is forgotten. Watch problem 6 of this word problems — "A bookshelf has 7 picture books, 5 comic books, and 2…" — for this one.
The student is running a two-number procedure and stopping when it ends.
Have the student circle the pair that makes ten first, then add the remaining number, so the third addend is part of the plan from the start.
