What this worksheet covers
This is a 60-problem timed drill for grade 1 addition, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, seventeen of the 60 column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 89. Problems 21 and 41, for instance, are "22 + 30" and "64 + 30". Common Core 1.OA.6 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
The grade 1 addition sequence covers fact fluency within 20, three addends, and two-digit plus one-digit numbers; this page sits inside it. The skills on the page: sums within 20, doubles facts, and adding multiples of ten. Working the page asks a student to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. 40 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 60; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 21, "22 + 30" is a typical item, is three to four minutes. Fact recall has to be automatic before column addition can be, and a timed page is the only honest test of automatic.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 31 is "8 + 11", Set B's is "3 + 14".
How to use this worksheet
Sit alongside for this addition timed drill. At grade 1 the useful information is not the score but which of the 60 problems drew a pause. Print Set B of this addition timed drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
