What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 2 drill sheet holds twenty addition problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: ten of the twenty column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 20. Two problems from the middle of the page — "17 + 17" and "6 + 17" — show the range. The sheet sits inside Common Core 2.NBT.5, in the grade 2 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.

Skills practised

The grade 2 addition sequence covers two-digit addition within 100 with regrouping, and a first look at three-digit sums; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise grade 2 Addition Practice. Working the page asks a student to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. Fifteen different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

This drill runs 20 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 7, "17 + 17" shows the level it holds. A straight run of sums is where regrouping becomes routine rather than an event.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the original MathSheetLab worksheet; Sets B and C keep its structure and redraw the numbers, with each answer recomputed rather than copied. Where Set A's problem 11 is "14 + 18", Set B's is "18 + 17".

How to use this worksheet

Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 2. Fold this drill in half, do one part of the twenty problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Print Set B of this addition drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.

One mistake to watch for

Speed collapses under a timer even though accuracy is fine. Watch problem 14 of this drill — "6 + 17" — for this one.

Facts are being reconstructed by counting rather than recalled.

Time a short run of the same facts daily for a week; the goal is a falling time on the same page, not a bigger page.

A step either side

The same format one grade down and one grade up — the easier sheet is often the faster fix when this one is not landing.
