What this worksheet covers
There are twenty addition problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Seventeen of the twenty column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 619. Problems 7 and 14, for instance, are "356 + 428" and "275 + 486". The sheet sits inside Common Core 2.NBT.7, in the grade 2 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.

Grade 2 addition means two-digit addition within 100 with regrouping, and a first look at three-digit sums. The skill on the page: adding Within 1000 Practice. Working the page asks a student to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time.
About the vertical format format
Vertical format stacks the two operands over a rule with space above for regrouped digits; the 20 problems, problem 7, "356 + 428" among them, sit four to a row. Stacked operands make the place-value columns visible, which is what regrouping actually depends on.
Set A, Set B and Set C
Set A is the sheet as it was first published on MathSheetLab, and Sets B and C were derived from it problem by problem: each number became a slot redrawn with the same shape, and every answer was recomputed exactly. Where Set A's problem 11 is "153 + 478", Set B's is "194 + 191".
How to use this worksheet
Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 2. Fold this vertical format in half, do one part of the twenty problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Date the vertical format before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the addition stuck.
One mistake to watch for
Speed collapses under a timer even though accuracy is fine. On this grade 2 vertical format, problem 14 ("275 + 486") is the kind of item where it shows.
Facts are being reconstructed by counting rather than recalled.
Time a short run of the same facts daily for a week; the goal is a falling time on the same page, not a bigger page.
