What this worksheet covers
There are 24 addition problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 97. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "62 + ___ = 84" and "54 + ___ = 90". Common Core 2.NBT.5 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
Grade 2 addition means two-digit addition within 100 with regrouping, and a first look at three-digit sums. Specifically, the problems practise two-digit addition within 100. Working the page asks a student to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Nineteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the missing number format
Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "62 + ___ = 84" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A blank on the left or in the middle turns addition into its own inverse and builds the fact-family idea that subtraction rests on.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "44 + ___ = 59", Set B's is "___ + 12 = 27".
How to use this worksheet
Sit alongside for this addition missing number. At grade 2 the useful information is not the score but which of the 24 problems drew a pause. If more than a third of the 24 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in addition rather than assigning Set B.
One mistake to watch for
Speed collapses under a timer even though accuracy is fine. Problem 17 on this grade 2 missing number page, "54 + ___ = 90", is where to look for it.
Facts are being reconstructed by counting rather than recalled.
Time a short run of the same facts daily for a week; the goal is a falling time on the same page, not a bigger page.
