What this worksheet covers

This is a 60-problem timed drill for grade 7 ratios and proportions, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits and the quantities are amounts of money, so answers need a dollar or cent sign to be complete. Problems 21 and 41, for instance, are "Simplify the ratio 18:72." and "5:3 = ___:12". The sheet sits inside Common Core 7.RP.1, in the grade 7 Ratios & Proportional Relationships strand.

Skills practised

Grade 7 ratios and proportions means solving proportions, unit rates, the constant of proportionality and scale drawings. What a student is asked to do here is unit rates, equivalent ratios, and simplifying ratios. To finish it, a student has to keep the decimal points aligned, carry money notation through to the answer, and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 46 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 60; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 21, "Simplify the ratio 18:72." is a typical item, is three to four minutes. Equivalent ratios and simple unit rates recalled quickly are multiplication facts wearing a different coat.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 31 is "369 pages in 9 days = ___ pages per day", Set B's is "62 pages in 2 days = ___ pages per day".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 7 an ratios and proportions answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 60 answers. Keep the key face down until all 60 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
