What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 7 timed drill sheet holds 60 fractions problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part and operands run to three decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Two problems from the middle of the page — "Write 7/10 as a decimal." and "1/2 × 1/4" — show the range. Common Core 6.NS.1 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 7 fractions means complex fractions, signed fractions, and fractions as terminating and repeating decimals. Specifically, the problems practise dividing fractions, multiplying fractions, and fractions to decimals. To finish it, a student has to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms and keep the decimal points aligned. 47 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

With 60 short problems such as problem 21, "Write 7/10 as a decimal." and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. Equivalent fractions and simple sums recalled quickly are what free a student's attention for the harder operations later.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 31 is "8/10 ÷ 3/6", Set B's is "2/10 ÷ 4/5".

How to use this worksheet

Work it without a calculator. Every one of the 60 fractions problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 7 skips exactly the reasoning being built. Ask the student to re-work one missed fractions problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
