What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 6 timed drill sheet holds 60 ratios and proportions problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits and the quantities are amounts of money, so answers need a dollar or cent sign to be complete. Two problems from the middle of the page — "6:8 = 18:___" and "1:6 = 5:___" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 6.RP.3 — Ratios & Proportional Relationships, grade 6.
Skills practised
At grade 6, ratios and proportions is about writing and simplifying ratios, equivalent ratios, ratio tables, unit rates and ratios as percents, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is equivalent ratios, simplifying ratios, and unit rates. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can keep the decimal points aligned, carry money notation through to the answer, and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 52 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
With 60 short problems such as problem 21, "6:8 = 18:___" and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. Equivalent ratios and simple unit rates recalled quickly are multiplication facts wearing a different coat.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 31 is "351 miles in 9 hours = ___ miles per hour", Set B's is "708 pages in 12 days = ___ pages per day".
How to use this worksheet
Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 6 an ratios and proportions answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 60 answers. Keep the key face down until all 60 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
