What this worksheet covers

60 expressions and equations problems fill this timed drill page; problem 21 asks "Solve: x - -11 = 8", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. 42 of the 60 problems involve a negative quantity and the expressions carry exponents, so the order of operations decides the answer. Further down, problem 41 asks "Evaluate 5x + 17 when x = -6.". Common Core 7.EE.1 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

The grade 7 expressions and equations sequence covers two-step equations, the distributive property, like terms with signed coefficients and one-step inequalities; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is combining like terms with signed coefficients, evaluating expressions with negative values, and one-step equations with integers. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, track direction as well as magnitude, and apply the order of operations to powers. 53 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

With 60 short problems such as problem 21, "Solve: x - -11 = 8" and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. Evaluating expressions and one-step equations quickly is the fluency multi-step algebra rests on.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 31 is "Simplify: 9x + (-9) + 4x + (-7)", Set B's is "Simplify: 1x + (-5) + 7x + (-5)".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for 60 problems. At grade 7, expressions and equations rewards care over speed — a rushed timed drill gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Date the timed drill before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the expressions and equations stuck.
