What this worksheet covers

There are 60 decimals problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Some values are written as fractions rather than whole numbers and operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Problems 21 and 41, for instance, are "Write 0.87 as a percent." and "5.2 × 7.0". Common Core 7.NS.2 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

At grade 7, decimals is about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing signed decimals, and repeating decimals, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is fractions as terminating and repeating decimals, multiplying decimals, and decimals and percents. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms and keep the decimal points aligned. 59 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 60; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 21, "Write 0.87 as a percent." is a typical item, is three to four minutes. Quick decimal comparisons and small sums are the fluency that keeps multi-step decimal work from stalling.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 31 is "Write 7/8 as a decimal.", Set B's is "Write 1/16 as a decimal.".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for 60 problems. At grade 7, decimals rewards care over speed — a rushed timed drill gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Print Set B of this decimals timed drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
