What this worksheet covers

There are 30 ratios and proportions problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, some values are written as fractions rather than whole numbers and the numbers run as high as 550. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "Solve: 8/x = 48/24" and "Solve: 10/x = 40/12". The sheet sits inside Common Core 7.RP.2, in the grade 7 Ratios & Proportional Relationships strand.

Skills practised

At grade 7, ratios and proportions is about solving proportions, unit rates, the constant of proportionality and scale drawings, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skills on the page: solving proportions and unit rates. To finish it, a student has to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 24 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

A drill is straight practice: 30 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 11, "Solve: 8/x = 48/24" is typical of the whole page. A run of proportions or unit rates lets the setup become mechanical so attention can move to the reasoning.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "246 miles in 6 hours = ___ miles per hour", Set B's is "$9.00 for 3 items = $___ per item".

How to use this worksheet

Work it without a calculator. Every one of the 30 ratios and proportions problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 7 skips exactly the reasoning being built. Mark the 30 problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

A ratio is written in the wrong order: boys to girls given as girls to boys. Watch problem 21 of this drill — "Solve: 10/x = 40/12" — for this one.

The order of the words in the question is not being mapped to the order of the numbers.

Write the labels first — boys : girls — and fill the numbers under them.
