What this worksheet covers

This is a 10-problem word problems for grade 7 ratios and proportions, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part. Problems 4 and 7, for instance, are "A paint mix is 7 parts blue to 2 parts white. How many…" and "A recipe uses 8 cups of flour for every 5 cups of sugar.…".

Skills practised

The grade 7 ratios and proportions sequence covers solving proportions, unit rates, the constant of proportionality and scale drawings; this page sits inside it. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing, work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms, and keep the decimal points aligned.

About the word problems format

The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "A paint mix is 7 parts blue to 2 parts white. How many…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Recipes, speeds and prices are where proportional reasoning is actually used, and where a wrong setup is obvious.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A machine finishes 1/2 of a part in 3/4 hour. What is the…", Set B's is "A machine finishes 3/4 of a part in 1/4 hour. What is the…".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 7 an ratios and proportions answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the ten answers. Print Set B of this ratios and proportions word problems before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.

One mistake to watch for

A ratio is written in the wrong order: boys to girls given as girls to boys. Watch problem 7 of this word problems — "A recipe uses 8 cups of flour for every 5 cups of sugar.…" — for this one.

The order of the words in the question is not being mapped to the order of the numbers.

Write the labels first — boys : girls — and fill the numbers under them.
