What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 3 mixed review sheet holds 30 addition problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, thirteen of the twenty column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 983. Two problems from the middle of the page — "24 + 27 + 52 + 20" and "865 + 909" — show the range. Common Core 3.NBT.2 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

The grade 3 addition sequence covers three-digit column addition with regrouping in more than one place; this page sits inside it. The skills on the page: three-digit addition with regrouping, adding two-digit numbers mentally, and adding four two-digit numbers. To finish it, a student has to carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit. 29 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

The 30 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 11, "24 + 27 + 52 + 20" is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. Alternating shapes stops a student from running one procedure on autopilot down the page.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "13 + 16", Set B's is "18 + 30".

How to use this worksheet

Give this mixed review uninterrupted. At grade 3, addition is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 30 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. If more than a third of the 30 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in addition rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Regrouping is skipped: 47 + 38 is answered as 715. On this grade 3 mixed review, problem 21 ("865 + 909") is the kind of item where it shows.

Each column is treated as its own one-digit problem with no place-value structure joining them.

Return to expanded form for a few days and ask what 7 + 8 is worth; fifteen ones cannot sit in the ones column.
