Other ways to solve this

Using 7 × 12 from this sheet (Set A, problem 1). Each method below reaches the same answer, 84, by a different route; pick the one that makes the most sense to you.

Lattice method

Helps keep carrying tidy: every digit product gets its own box, and you only add at the end.

  1. Step 1Write 7 across the top and 12 down the right side, one digit per box.

  2. Step 2Multiply each pair of digits. Put the tens above the diagonal and the ones below it.

    • 1 × 7 = 7 → tens 0, ones 7
    • 2 × 7 = 14 → tens 1, ones 4

  3. Step 3Add along each diagonal, starting at the bottom right. Carry when a sum is 10 or more.

    • Diagonal 1 (from the bottom right): 4 = 4
    • Diagonal 2 (from the bottom right): 8 = 8
    • Diagonal 3 (from the bottom right): 0 = 0

  4. Step 4Read the digits down the left side and along the bottom: 8 4. So 7 × 12 = 84.

Doubling and halving

Helps when you can halve and double quickly: the only hard step is one addition at the end.

  1. Step 1Put the smaller number, 7, in the left column and 12 in the right column.

  2. Step 2Halve the left number (drop any remainder) and double the right number, row by row, until the left reaches 1.

  3. Step 3Cross out every row with an even number on the left.

  4. Step 4Add the right column of the rows that are left: 12 + 24 + 48 = 84.

  5. Step 5So 7 × 12 = 84.

Estimate first

Helps you catch place-value slips: round, estimate, then check that the exact answer is close.

  1. Step 1Round each number to its first digit: 7 stays 7; 12 rounds to 10.

  2. Step 2Estimate: 7 × 10 = 70.

  3. Step 3Now work it out exactly: 7 × 12 = 84.

  4. Step 4Compare: 84 is 14 away from the estimate of 70. An answer with a different number of digits from the estimate usually means a place-value slip.

The expressions carry exponents, so the order of operations decides the answer and the numbers run as high as 15. Two problems from the middle of the page — "9 × 9" and "5 × 12" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 3.OA.7 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 3.

Skills practiced

Grade 6 multiplication means multi-digit multiplication, greatest common factor, least common multiple and perfect squares. Specifically, the problems practice multiplication facts to 12 × 12 and perfect squares to 15². Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can apply the order of operations to powers. 44 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

With 60 short problems such as problem 21, "9 × 9" and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. The times tables are the one set of facts that must be automatic, and a timed page is how you find out whether they are.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 31 is "9 × 4", Set B's is "11 × 10".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for 60 problems. At grade 6, multiplication rewards care over speed — a rushed timed drill gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Ask the student to re-work one missed multiplication problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
