What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 4 drill sheet holds 30 multiplication problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 98. Two problems from the middle of the page — "71 × 5" and "35 × 8" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 4.NBT.5 — Number & Operations in Base Ten, grade 4.
Skills practised
At grade 4, multiplication is about two- and three-digit by one-digit products and two-digit by two-digit multiplication, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise two-digit by one-digit multiplication and two-digit by two-digit multiplication. Working the page asks a student to recall the multiplication facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. 29 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
This drill runs 30 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 11, "71 × 5" shows the level it holds. Thirty untimed products let a student practise the algorithm while accuracy, not speed, is the target.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "87 × 69", Set B's is "70 × 49".
How to use this worksheet
By grade 4 a student should take all 30 multiplication problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more multiplication practice piles on. Keep the key face down until all 30 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
One mistake to watch for
The carried digit in long multiplication is added before multiplying instead of after. Problem 21 on this grade 4 drill page, "35 × 8", is where to look for it.
The order of the two steps in each column has not been made explicit.
Say the two steps aloud for a few problems: multiply first, then add what was carried.
