What this worksheet covers
30 mixed operations problems fill this mixed review page; problem 11 asks "11 × 10 + 56", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, two of the 30 problems involve a negative quantity and four of the six column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked. Further down, problem 21 asks "707 + 555". Common Core 5.OA.1 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
At grade 5, mixed operations is about order of operations with parentheses and multi-digit computation, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is order of operations with parentheses, all four operations with multi-digit numbers, and two-step expressions. To finish it, a student has to carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit and track direction as well as magnitude. 29 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the mixed review format
The 30 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 11, "11 × 10 + 56" is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. This format is the operation's natural home: every problem shape the grade knows, in no fixed order.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "4 × (17 - 6)", Set B's is "(11 + 10) × 4".
How to use this worksheet
Give this mixed review uninterrupted. At grade 5, mixed operations is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 30 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. If more than a third of the 30 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in mixed operations rather than assigning Set B.
One mistake to watch for
Two-step expressions are evaluated left to right: 3 + 4 × 5 gives 35. Problem 21 on this grade 5 mixed review page, "707 + 555", is where to look for it.
The convention that multiplication comes first has not been taught, or is not yet automatic.
Box the multiplication or division first on every problem, then evaluate, and only then add or subtract.
