What this worksheet covers

This is a 30-problem mixed review for grade 4 mixed operations, printed in black and white with the key on page two. One of the 30 problems involve a negative quantity and two of the three column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "29 + 12 × 5" and "(12 + 11) × 4". The sheet sits inside Common Core 4.OA.3, in the grade 4 Operations & Algebraic Thinking strand.

Skills practised

Grade 4 mixed operations means two-step problems and expressions with parentheses. What a student is asked to do here is two-step mixed operations, all four operations with larger numbers, and expressions with parentheses. Working the page asks a student to carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit and track direction as well as magnitude. 29 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 30 problems here cover three different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 11, "29 + 12 × 5" sits next to problems of a different kind. This format is the operation's natural home: every problem shape the grade knows, in no fixed order.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "76 + 32", Set B's is "3 × 4 + 18".

How to use this worksheet

By grade 4 a student should take all 30 mixed operations problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more mixed operations practice piles on. If more than a third of the 30 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in mixed operations rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Parentheses are treated as decoration. On this grade 4 mixed review, problem 21 ("(12 + 11) × 4") is the kind of item where it shows.

Grouping symbols have been seen but not yet connected to "do this part first".

Have the student rewrite the value of the bracket above it before doing anything else.
